2009 TOURNAMENT RESULTS!
This was the 32nd annual meeting between the top players from the Huntington Tennis Association and the Tennis Association of Farmingdale. Farmingdale leads the overall series with 23 victories, however Huntington has overtaken their Nassau rivals 3 out of the last 4 years. This year the TAF proved to be a formitable opponent and the HTA succumbed to it's cross county rival.
The morning of the tournament was wet and wild. The teams arrived at the courts at 8:00 in the morning and the courts were still wet from the previous evenings rain. After our many volunteers helped squeege and towel dry the courts, we were ready for play.
It turned out to be a glorious day for tennis, perfect temperature, and plenty of sunshine after the initial dampness. There were plenty of HTA members there to cheer on our players. Many of the fans and players stayed on until the very last match of the day. It was a wonderful showing of support and I know our players appreciate it.
The day began with a resounding victory by Cyndi Leventhal playing at 3rd Womens Singles, 6-1, 6-0 against her TAF opponent. The HTA always counts on Cyndi for a win in the tournament and, once again, she did not disappoint! Playing 3rd doubles for the women were Gloria Hannemann and Linda Saal who lost their match to the very strong team of Burban and Zach from the TAF. At third singles for the mens team Steve Greco, playing up from his position on the ladder, came up against a verytough, hard hitting opponent. He played a good match, but eventuallylost. The third mens doubles team of Russ DiFazio and Don Walsh scored a victory for the HTA at 6-1, 6-2. Don and Russ just completed a very successful USTA season together and their teamwork really showed in their match. The 3rd mixed doubles team of of Monica Kullis and Neal Alexander battled tough in one of the longest matches of the day and eventually lost at a close 6-4, 6-4.This was Monica and Neal's first time in the tournament and we look forward to seeing them compete again in the HTA next year.
In the 2nd position at womens singles Debbie Catton defeated her TAF opponent, 6-4, 6-2 with her family on the sidelines cheering her on to bring in the third victory of the day for the HTA. Victoria Geringswald and Rachel Piraneo played one of the most exciting and longest matches of the day. After dropping the first set 1-6, they rallied in the second to win 6-3 forcing a third set 10 point tie breaker. They lost the tie breaker 13 - 11! Both Victoria and Rachel played it calm and cool, even under the pressure of the third set and with many HTA members cheering them on. Playing at second singles for the men, the lefty Richie Lawerence lost to a very tough opponent in two sets. After the long rain delay, the 2nd position mens doubles, Dave Weinstien and Rob Reimann finally got on the court in the late morning. They found tough opponents in the TAF team of Waterhouse and Hume. After being down in the first, they rallied and played tough in the second, but ended at 6-7. The German's played 2nd position mixed doubles and lost to Resigno - Russo of TAF.
Playing in their first HTA tournament together, Denise Corby and new mom, Laurie Jovans, showed their tennis skills against the TAF by winning 6-3, 6-2. Laurie and Denise fought hard in many long rallies to win their match. First place finishers Danny Hutt and veteran HTA tournament player, John Pappa lost a close 6-4, 6-4 mens doubles match against the Lowelly - Alborano team of the TAF. The mixed doubles team of Carol and Chris Henn, playing in their second tournament together, lost in two long sets, with one break in the second 4-6. At first mens singles, Van Mai fought hard against the TAF in a two set match late in the day, but lost in two sets. Ellen DiFazio, playing first womens singles won her match at 6-1, 6-1.
It was another very special day for the HTA. Many thanks go out to all those who volunteered at the tournament, especially Don and Lisa Walsh, Russ DiFazio, Gabrielle Kayser, who kept everything running smoothly, Gloria Hannemann, Nancy Feldman and Cyndi Leventhal. What a great team!
Next year we will bring the trophy home!
